"From Russia with Love" "poster girl" Anita Ekberg has passed away

Anita Ekberg (29 September 1931 – 11 January 2015) whose picture was seen on poster in Bond movie "From Russia with Love" (1963) has passed away.

Ekberg was married 1963-1975 with Rik Van Nutter, who is remembered as Felix Leiter in "Thunderball" (1965).








In "From Russia with Love" James Bond and his ally Kerim Bey visited villain Krilencu's hideout (behind a giant billboard film poster on a brick wall for the 1963 film "Call Me Bwana" - a Bob Hope comedy with Anita Ekberg, produced by Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli) where Bey shot and killed Krilencu with Bond's sniper rifle as he was escaping through a private hatch in the brick wall - crawling out of the mouth of actress Anita Ekberg.

Kerim Bey: - Do you notice anything?

Bond: - Not yet.

Kerim Bey: - She has a lovely mouth, that Anita.

Bond: - Yes. I see what you mean.

From a spent golden bullet, Bond tracks Scaramanga to Macau, where he sees Scaramanga's mistress collecting golden bullets at a casino.

While searching for Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE, Bond saves Tracy di Vicenzo on the beach from committing suicide by drowning, and later meets her again in a casino. Bond then receives information from Marc-Ange Draco, the head of the European crime syndicate Unione Corse and Tracy's father, about Blofeld's Swiss solicitor. Bond breaks into the solicitors office and establishes Blofeld is corresponding with the London College of Arms. Posing as an emissary of the college, Bond meets Blofeld, who has established a clinical allergy-research institute atop Piz Gloria in the Swiss Alps. Bond soon establishes that Blofeld is brainwashing his patients to distribute bacteriological warfare agents throughout various parts of the world.

The film's plot has Bond investigating gold smuggling by gold magnate Auric Goldfinger and eventually uncovering Goldfinger's plans to attack the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. Goldfinger was the first Bond blockbuster, with a budget equal to that of the two preceding films combined. Principal photography took place from January to July 1964 in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the U.S. states of Kentucky and Florida.

007 Travelers visited Hotel Eiger Mürren, and met Mrs. Annelis Stähli-von Allmen.
We asked her about her hotel, about James Bond and traveling and of course
filming 007 movie "On Her Majesty´s Secret Service" (1969), starring George Lazenby.

007 Connection: George Lazenby has stayed here in 2013 during opening of BOND WORLD 007.

Also while filming "On Her Majesty´s Secret Service" (1969) part of the filming crew stayed here and they together with George Lazenby celebrated in Hotel Eiger´s Tächi Bar.

He also played poker in Hotel Eiger for so long against Telly Savalas (Ernst Stavro Blofeld) and lost, so producer Harry Saltzman later asked Savalas to return the money to George Lazenby.

1. How long did you work in Hotel Eiger Mürren?

I grew up in the Hotel Eiger, I started working here full time for the Winter Season 1959/60, from the beginning of December 1959, then my father had a heart problem in January 1960 and I run the hotel with my mother, married in 1964 to Walter Stähli from Brienz and together we run the place till he passed away very suddenly at the age of 62 in 1997, my mother followed the same year being 89, I retired when my son Adrian married Susanna in 2007, I will be 77 at the end of October!

2. Tell us about George Lazenby, filming of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (1969) and anything that comes to your mind when the cast and crew of OHMSS stayed in Mürren?

George Lazenby stayed at the Palace Hotel, he used to come to the Tächi Bar for dinner on several occasions and I found him a very nice person. As the crew was always busy until about 5 pm, when they were free they needed some dinner, and as our barman Paul Köster, who was actually the barman in the film, was always with the crew on Schilthorn, they very often came to have dinner at the Eiger. The producers Mr. Broccoli and Mr. Saltzman and the director Peter Hunt, often also the Canadian investor of the Schilthornbahn, Bart Morgan were eating in the Tächi Bar which had been turned into a à la carte Restaurant with high quality of food. When the bosses were there, the stuntmen might sit on the table next to them and they were always anxious that they got served just the same! We had two super buffet dinners, one was for the crew to cheer them up, the other was a wedding party and I brought Sandra, my daughter, then aged 6 months, down to introduce her and Diana Rigg offered her some champagne which she seemed to enjoy :) I think this is why her taste of wine is so excellent and she became a wine expert! I have nothing but good memories of the time of the film.

George Lazenby came back to Mürren for the celebration of the 45^th anniversary of the film OHMSS and he stayed with us at the Eiger. It was really nice seeing him again and talking of the film.

3. Who is your favourite James Bond actor? (leading male role)

Maybe Sean Connery – or Roger Moore. I have not seen all the Bond Movies but it’s hard to make a choice between the two.

4. The best Bond movie?

I think OHMSS – as it was filmed in reality, not computer animation – there are so many lovely outdoor scenes. Just blowing up Piz Gloria was filmed in Pinewood studios, Bart Morgan had been invited to witness this – he said it was spectacular.

5. Which is the best place where you have traveled so far?

The best place for me is Hawaii.

6. Which is the place where you would like to visit but have not yet been?

I would like to visit New Zealand one day.

Herschel Saltzman, better known as Harry Saltzman, was a Canadian theatre and film producer best known for his mega-gamble which resulted in his co-producing the James Bond film series with Albert R. Broccoli. He lived most of his life in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England.

James Bond: 1962-74
In 1960, Broccoli's Warwick Films undertook to produce and self-distribute the biographical drama Oscar Wilde. Its lack of commercial success began a chain of events leading to dissolution of the company in bankruptcy in 1961 and increased tensions between the two partners. Already in disagreement over James Bond, they ended their partnership, freeing Broccoli to revisit his decision that the Bond novels would make a good film series, only now to be told by the publishers the rights were unavailable. Later, screenwriter Wolf Mankowitz, had a working dinner in New York on another script with Broccoli. Mankowitz knew Saltzman casually from Broadway productions the two had been involved with and knew Saltzman held the rights to Bond. He offered to introduce the two men and arranged a meeting for the next morning. Saltzman and Broccoli formed a partnership in 1962 to create the holding company Danjaq, LLC and the production company Eon Productions and almost immediately began recruiting personnel such as production designer Ken Adam and teaming writers including Richard Maibaum and Mankowitz. With the rights to Casino Royale having gone to an early television adaptation, the team began considering the best novel to adapt and introduce the character. After meeting with United Artists and having received a million dollars in financing, the filmmakers chose Dr. No. Saltzman would remain Broccoli's partner up through the ninth film in the series, 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun.

Saltzman came close to rejecting Paul McCartney's submission for the soundtrack to Live and Let Die. McCartney asked producer George Martin to approach the producers about the title song. Saltzman surprised Martin by asking who they could get to sing it, suggesting only black female vocalists. Martin pointed out that if he did not take McCartney as the singer he did not get the song. Saltzman compromised by having McCartney do the title version and B. J. Arnau do a soul version in the "Fillet of Soul" nightclub.
