007 Travelers mentioned on Compass Rose´s website

007 Travelers mentioned on Compass Rose´s website.

"Someone who loves a bit of steak is of course Mr Bond, and all things 007 continue to make the news with the arrival of the Sam Smith theme tune this week (what do you think? A bit of a mournful moan imo). I mentioned Ian Fleming: A Personal Memoir by Robert Harling (hb, £20.00 978 1849549356) coming from Robson Press a couple of weeks ago; and don’t forget about The Bluffer’s Guide to Bond (pb, 978 1909365049, £6.99) when you are assembling your 007 display. This is a compendium of all the known facts about Bond; the man, likes, dislikes, tastes in food and drink, the films, which book or short story they came from, as well as the post Fleming authors. Plus, of course, an enormous amount of brilliant Bond trivia! As one critic says: “After reading through this you are going to know a lot more about Bond than anyone you are likely to be discussing him with and, as importantly, this is really quite a fun read.”

"This essential Bluffer’s title has just been reviewed in Finnish (!)  by 007 Travelers which is a hilarious  blog written by Pirita and Mika, who travel around the world searching for 007 filming locations and places from Bond books, 007 hotels and 007 restaurants – and indeed anything Bond related. Now THAT’S the job I want! Find them on Twitter @007travelers and at www.007travelers.blogspot.com"

"The Bluffer's Guide to Bond" is a really compact (117 pages) package for Bond enthusiasts, who already know everything about Bond. The book is at its best when it compares James Bond in books to Bond in the world of 007 movies. Book is full of clever knowledge about Bond and most important information might be, that when you know about things that are mentioned in Bond books, it makes you the real Bond aficionado. Bond in books is something that is raised above Bond in 007 films:

"The key to bluffing your way in Bond is to understand one crucial fact: the films are nowhere near as good as the books -even when Fleming was noticeably losing his touch towards the end. Once you have adopted this as your central argument, everything you say will earn the respect due to an obvious expert."

Most parts of the book concentrates comparing 007 in books and films and it makes it really professional way without forgetting that you can write things also in funny way. The book is focusing to Ian Fleming's books but it won´t forget other Bond authors.

Basic purpose of the book is to guide how you can achieve a place as a Bond aficionado easily without reading hundreds of books about Bond.

Most positive thing in the book is that there are no errors. Many of the books that are "guides to Bond" include factual errors and some data is not accurate. "The Bluffer's Guide to Bond" rises above other books in this case.

The chapter that presents Bond girls "Oh James", is also interesting, but it could tell us  more about Bond girls and other ladies in Bond films.

When book is about to reach its end, it loses a grip a bit. Chapters "Essential Bond Miscellany" and "Being Bond" are nicely written, but are maybe little bit unnecessary.

As a whole book is anyhow fascinating collection of knowledge from the world of Bond.

Rate: Good.

"The Bluffer's Guide to Bond" on todella kompakti (117 sivua) paketti Bond-tietäjille, jotka tietävät jo Bondista kaiken. Muutenkin kirjallista Bondia nostetaan esiin elokuvallisen Bondin yläpuolelle:

"The key to bluffing your way in Bond is to understand one crucial fact: the films are nowhere near as good as the books -even when Fleming was noticeably losing his touch towards the end. Once you have adopted this as your central argument, everything you say will earn the respect due to an obvious expert."

Kirjan pohjimmaisena tarkoituksena on opastaa kuinka voit helpolla tavalla saavuttaa aseman Bond-tietäjänä.

Ehdottomasti positiivisena asiana täytyy tuoda esille faktatiedon virheettömyys. Useiden Bondista kertovien teosten vikana on, se että niissä esiintyy virheitä ja epätarkkuuksia. Bluffer's Guide to Bond nousee ehdottomasti tässä monien muiden vastaavien teosten yläpuolelle.

Kokonaisuudessaan kirja on kuitenkin kiehtova kokoelma knoppeja Bondin maailmasta.

Arvio: Hyvä

The Bluffer's Guide to Bond by Mark Mason

Bond fans around the world and also in Finland:

The Bluffer's Guide to Bond is now available!

"Bond is what every man would like to be, and what every woman would like between her sheets."
The Sunday Times book review of "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service" (1963)

You can read the sample of The Bluffer's Guide to Bond here.

About the author

Mark Mason has long struggled to accept that he is not James Bond. Born in the year of Sean Connery’s "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971) ‘comeback’ (or, as it is known to Chinese Bond fans, The Year of the Hairpiece), he has drawn constant inspiration from 007, in spite of an early seduction attempt involving a vodka martini and a faulty cocktail shaker which left him with a large dry cleaning bill.

As well as being the author of novels and non-fiction works — including "The Importance of Being Trivial", "Walk the Lines", a book about walking the entire London tube network (overground) and "The Bluffer’s Guide to Football" — Mason is also a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines. He suspects that Bond wouldn’t have much time for him.
