007 Hotel: Mercure Paris Terminus Nord, Paris, France

MERCURE PARIS TERMINUS NORD

Location: Paris, France
Address: 12 Boulevard De Denain
Bond book appearance: For Your Eyes Only - short story From a View to a Kill and Death Is Forever

Opposite the Gare du Nord, the hotel is ideally placed for getting to the Stade de France, the Le Bourget Exhibition Grounds and Villepinte. This cosy establishment is easily reached by public transport and is close to the Lariboisière Hospital. The hotel has large rooms, some with a view of Montmartre and Sacré Coeur.

129 euros / night, no breakfast included. (2013)
Standard Room with a double bed. Decorated in a style that combines modernity and tradition, the rooms feature a large double bed, a comfortable workspace, flat-screen TV, safe, air conditioning, and free WIFI. Bathroom with bathtub.

Bond stays in hotel Terminus Nord in Ian Fleming's short story "From a View to a Kill". In John Gardner's "Death Is Forever" he says that Terminus Nord's restaurant is one of his favourite restaurants in Paris.

"When Bond was in Paris he invariably stuck to the same addresses. He stayed at the Terminus Nord, because he liked station hotels and because this was the least pretentious and most anonymous of them."

Ian Fleming: "From a View to a Kill"

"Of all the railway stations in Europe, Bond liked the Gare du Nord best. The place held special memories for him. It was also within walking distance of one of his favourite restaurants in Paris - Terminus Nord.
Bistros and restaurants hovering in the shadow of any great railway terminus should normally be avoided. Inevitably their clientele consists of birds of passage, people leaving and arriving at the station. So it follows that the service is perfunctory, at best; at worst, slapdash; while the food is only passable. Happily Terminus Nord, directly opposite the Gare du Nord, is a prestigious exception. Its service is impeccable, while the food attracts gourmets who are not merely passing through the French capital or using the railway station."

Standard rooms
The rooms of the gateway are former fellows' apartments served by a wooden gateway. They have a view on Villa Medici's gardens or on the gardens of the celebrated church of the Trinità dei Monti. They are comfortable rooms of about 40 m2, equipped with a doublebed on a mezzanine floor and a bathroom with a shower. Different smaller rooms (of about 20 m2) as comfortable as the others, are also available. They are equipped with a doublebed and a bathroom with a shower.

007 Restaurant: H Club Doney bar of Excelsior Hotel, Rome, Italy

H CLUB DONEY BAR OF EXCELSIOR HOTEL

Location: Rome, Italy
Address: Via Vittorio Veneto, 141
Bond book appearance: For Your Eyes Only, the short story Risico

A contemporary meeting spot with a celebrated tradition, this is Rome's most lavish street café. Be it a table on Via Veneto or the lounge, the perfect place to see and be seen and the ideal choice for breakfast, informal lunch, aperitifs or after-dinner drinks. "BioèLogico" organic lunches and theme picnic hampers are available everyday from Monday to Friday.

"James Bond felt the inspection. The same surreptitious ex-amination had been going on since he had met the man two hours before at the rendezvous in the Excelsior bar. Bond had been told to look for a man with a heavy moustache who would be sittingby himself drinking an Alexandra. Bond had been amuzed by this secret recognition signal. The creamy, feminine drink was so much cleverer than the folded newspaper, the flower in the buttonhole, the yellow gloves that were the hoary, slipshod call-signs between agents. It had also the great merit of being able to operate alone without its owner. And Kristatos had started off with a little test. Then Bond had come into the bar and looked round where had been perhaps twenty people in the room. None of them had a moustache. But on a corner table at the far side of the tall, discreet room, flanked by a saucer of olives and another of cashew nuts, stood the tall-stemmed glass of cream and vodka. Bond went straight over to the table, pulled out a chair and sat down. The waiter came. "Good evening, sir. Signor Kristatos is at the telephone." Bond nodded. "A Negroni. With Gordon's, please." The waiter walked back to the bar. "Negroni. Uno. Gordon's."

"They drew up at the best hotel in New York, the St. Regis, at the corner of Fifth avenue and 55 street. A saturnine middleaged man in a dark blue overcoat and black homburg came forward behind the commissionaire. On the sidewalk, Halloran introduced him.
“Mr. Bond, meet Captain Dexter.” He was referential. “Can I pass him along to you now, Captain?”
“Sure, sure. Just have his bags sent up. Room 2100. Top floor. I’ll go ahead with Mr. Bond and see he has everything he wants.”
“Bond, the collar of his new raincoat up round his ears, was missed as he came out of the entrance of the St. Regis Drugstore on 55th Street, which has a connecting door into the hotel."

While staying in New York, he spent several days in Stanhope, a five-star hotel opposite the Metropolitan museum. Sir William Stephenson had recommended it. Its precious things in spite of its grandeur and tranquility pleased Bond."

"He turned left out of the apartment building and walked a block down to the Parker Méridien. Across the street Ed Rushia, in a chauffeur’s cap, nodded at the wheel of a stretch limo. Bond smiled to himself. Ed was certainly an operator. They had told him to hire a car and back up. He had obviously done just that and hired a stretch limo. The night porter was on duty outside the 56th street entrance to the imposing hotel, and as Bond approached him, he stepped forward.
    “I help you buddy?”
“I need to use one of the public telephones.” He slipped a ten into the man’s hand.
“Oh, okay, sir. Thank you. You want I should get you a cap?”
