007 Travel story: London (ENGLAND) 2014, day 1/3

Back to London, England again. This time our airline was Norwegian and we had to change the plane in Norway's capital city Oslo.

Norwegian's airplane landed at Gatwick airport and from there we took a bus towards central London. And last kilometers we traveled by taxi and finally reached our destination, which was 5 star luxury Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington.

Royal Garden Hotel has a Bond connection since Roger Moore's wedding ceremony was held there in 1969. Hotel staff welcomed us to hotel and showed our room number 1015.

We didn't have time to waste, so we started to walk towards first filming location. However, on the way there was Bombay Brasserie, where Sir Sean Connery has often enjoyed Chicken Masala.

"At 31 years young, Bombay Brasserie seems to have the secret of eternal youth. (Is it the curcumin in the curry?) And since its birthday celebrations last year, a whole new generation has discovered BB, where Sir Sean Connery used to come in for a chicken masala and Tom Cruise still gets takeaways, most recently when filming "All You Need is Kill"." (Tatler Restaurant Guide 2013).

(NOTE: "All You Need Is Kill" was retitled as "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014) before its release)

We also needed some food and since Bombay Brasserie was not yet open, we had to find another place, and we did: Nice Italian Olives restaurant. We had tasteful lasagne there!

After late lunch we took a metro and after a short walk we found Brompton Cemetery. This was a filming location of "GoldenEye" (1995), when Natalia Simonova (Izabella Scorupco) goes to meet Boris Grishenko (Alan Cumming). In the film the church is called Our Lady of Smolensk and it is located in St. Petersburg, Russia.

But in reality the church is in London, exteriors were filmed in Brompton Cemetery...

...but as soon as Natalia enters the church, filming location changes into Cathedral of St Sophia in Moscow Road, Bayswater. There we visited during one of our earlier London trips. See some pictures of the cathedral here.

Brompton Cemetery is located near Earl's Court in West London, England (postal districts SW5 and SW10), in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is managed by The Royal Parks, and is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Established by Act of Parliament, it opened in 1840 and was originally known as the West of London and Westminster Cemetery.

Then back to metro and we traveled to Sloane Square and saw Royal Court Theatre and also visited outside of Saatchi Gallery, which is one of Pierce Brosnan's favorite places in London.

"I love to attend theatre at the Royal Court, visit the Saatchi Gallery, there a number of stylish restaurants in the area, and some excellent shopping on King’s Road and Sloane Street." (Pierce Brosnan for Hackett Q&A in RTÉ Fashion).

James Bond has also visited in the same in a Bond book.

"He was not even disturbed by a curious portent he encountered while he was driving along King's Road into Sloane Square with half his mind on the traffic and the other half exploring the evening ahead.

It was a few minutes to six and there was thunder about. The sky threatened and it had become suddenly dark. Across the square from him, high up in the air, a bold electric sign started to flash on and off. The fading light-waves had caused the cathode tube to start the mechanism which would keep the sign flashing through the dark hours until, around six in the morning, the early light of the day would again sensitize the tube and cause the circuit to close.

Startled at the great crimson words, Bond pulled in to the curb, got out of the car and crossed to the other side of the street to get better view of the big skysign.

Ah! That was it. Some of the letters had been hidden by a neighbouring building. It was only one of those Shell advertisements. 'SUMMER SHELL IS HERE' was what it said.

Bond smiled to himself and walked back to his car and drove on.

When he had first seen the sign, half-hidden by the building, great crimson letters across the evening sky had flashed a different message.

They had said: 'HELL IS HERE...HELL IS HERE...HELL IS HERE.'"

In Gary Giblin's excellent filming location book "James Bond's London" Giblin writes: 

"Unfortunately, the author doesn't specify the precise location of the sign. Presumably, it would have been mounted on one of the buildings behind, and therefore partially obstructed by, the Royal Court Theatre, then newly rebuilt, and/or the tube station."

Soon after this we found James Bond's home. In John Pearson's book "James Bond, the Authorized Biography of 007" (1973), the author mentions exact address of 007's home: Wellington Square 30, and here it is! Is it even so that James is at home right now...? Well, we didn't want to disturb him and didn't ring his doorbell :)

"It had been for some years when he had lived in an apartment along Lincoln Street that Fleming had found for him, but he felt cozy in London and could not even think to settle down in another part of the city. The apartment address was Wellington Square 30. It had two floors, and his first thought was that it was too big for him."

When we walked back, we ate desserts in Mess Gallery and then headed to our hotel. We visited also hotel´s Min Jiang bar with a view on the top floor and drank a beer and a soft drink. After this it was time to wrap the first day and go to bed. Always nice to be in London!

Lontoossa Englannissa jälleen. Tällä kertaa lentoyhtiönämme oli Norwegian ja meidän piti vaihtaa konetta Norjan pääkaupungissa Oslossa.

Englantiin päästyämme Norwegianin kone laskeutui Gatwickin lentokentälle, josta matkasimme bussilla kohti Lontoon keskustaa. Viimeiset kilometrit menimme taksilla ja saavutimme päämäärämme eli viiden tähden luksushotelli Royal Garden hotellin Kensingtonissa.

Meillä ei ollut aikaa hukattavana, joten aloimme kävellä kohti ensimmäistä kuvauspaikkaa. Matkan varrella olikin ensin Bombay Brasserie, jossa Sir Sean Connery on usein syönyt ja tilannut chicken masalaa.

"31 vuotta nuori Bombay Brasserie näyttää löytäneen ikuisen nuoruuden salaisuuden (onko syynä kurkuma curryssä?). Ja viimevuotisten syntymäpäiväjuhlallisuuksiensa jälkeen kokonaan uusi sukupolvi on löytänyt BB:n, jossa Sean Connerylla oli tapana käydä syömässä chicken masalaa ja josta Tom Cruise hakee yhä noutoruokia, viimeksi silloin kun hän oli filmaamassa elokuvaa "All You Need is Kill"."  (Tatler Restaurant Guide 2013).

HUOM: "All You Need Is Kill" nimi muutettiin ennen julkaisua ja julkaistiin sitten nimellä "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014)

Me tarvitsimme myös ruokaa ja koska Bombay Brasserie ei ollut vielä auki, meidän piti löytää toinen paikka ja huomasimmekin lähistöllä mukavan italialaisen Olives -ravintolan. Siellä söimme maukkaat lasagnet!

Lounaan jälkeen matkustimme metrolla  ja siitä poistuttuamme löysimme lyhyen kävelymatkan päästä Bromptonin hautausmaan. 

Tämä on kuvauspaikka elokuvassa "007 ja kultainen silmä" (1995), kun Natalia Simonova (Izabella Scorupco) menee tapaamaan Boris Grishenkoa (Alan Cumming). Elokuvassa kirkon nimi on Our Lady of Smolensk ja se sijaitsee Pietarissa, Venäjällä.

...mutta heti kun Natalia menee kirkkoon sisään, kuvauspaikka muuttuu ja sisäkuvaukset on tehty St. Sophian katedraalissa, joka sijaitsee myöskin Lontoossa: Moscow Roadilla, Bayswaterilla. Siellä vierailimme eräällä aiemmalla Lontoon matkallamme. Katso kuvia katedraalista täältä.

Sitten takaisin metrolle ja matkustimme Sloane Squarelle ja näimme Royal Court teatterin ja vierailmme myös Saatchi Gallerian ulkopuolella. Galleria on yksi Pierce Brosnanin suosikkipaikoista Lontoossa.

"Rakastan teatterissa käyntiä Royal Courtilla, vierailua Saatchi Galleryssa, alueella on lukemattomia tyylikkäitä ravintoloita ja upeita ostospaikkoja King's Roadilla ja Sloane Streetillä." (Pierce Brosnan, Hackett Q&A, RTÉ Fashion) 

James Bond on myös vieraillut samalla alueella Bond - kirjassa:

"Hän ei hämmästynyt enää mistään ajaessaan King's Roadia Sloane Squarelle, ja hän keskittyi puolittain liikenteeseen ja puolittain miettimään edessä olevaa iltaa."

Muutamaa minuuttia vaille kuusi alkoi ukonilma ja taivaalla näkyi uhkaava sadepilvi. Yhtäkkiä oli tullut täysin pimeätä. Hänen edessään olevassa seinässä alkoi vilkkua rohkea valomainos, joka välähteli edestakaisin. Häipyvä valo oli saanut katodiputket hehkumaan lasketun järjestelmän mukaan, mikä merkitsi mainosvalon välähtelyä pimeiden tuntien aikana, kunnes päivänvalo herkistäisi aamulla kuuden aikaan jälleen putken ja sammuttaisi siten sen toiminnan.

Hämmästyneenä punaisten valosanojen sisällöstä Bond pysäytti autonsa ja nousi ulos. Hän meni toiselle puolelle katua saadakseen paremmin mainoksen näkyviinsä.

Siinä se oli. Muutamat kirjaimet olivat jääneet naapuritalon taakse. Kyseessä olikin tavallinen Shellin mainos: Summer Shell is here. (Kesä-Shell on täällä.)

Bond hymyili itsekseen ja meni takaisin autoonsa jatkaen matkaansa. Hän oli ensin nähnyt vain sanat: Hell is here. (Helvetti on täällä.)"

Gary Giblin kirjoittaa erinomaisessa kuvauspaikkakirjassaan "James Bond's London":

"Valitettavasti kirjailija ei täsmennä tarkkaa paikkaa mainokselle. Oletettavasti, se olisi ollut kiinnitettynä yhteen takana olleeseen taloon ja siitä syystä ollut osittain silloin juuri uudelleenrakennetun Royal Court -teatterin ja/tai metroaseman takana."

Pian tämän jälkeen löysimmekin James Bondin kodin! John Pearsonin kirjassa "James Bond, superagentin hurja elämä" (1973), kirjailija mainitsee 007:n kodin täsmällisen osoitteen: Wellington Square 30, ja tässä se on! Onko jopa niin, että itse James on kotona juuri nyt...? Emme viitsineet kuitenkaan käydä soittamassa ovikelloa :)

"Oli kulunut jo joitakin vuosia siitä kun hän oli asunut Flemingin hänelle löytämässä huoneistossa Lincoln Streetin varrella, mutta hän tunsi Lontoossa olevansa kotonaan eikä olisi voinut ajatellakaan asettumista johonkin kaupungin muuhun osaan. Asunnon osoite oli Wellington Square 30. Siinä oli kaksi kerrosta, ja hänen ensimmäinen ajatuksensa oli, että se oli hänelle liian suuri."

Kun kävelimme takaisin, pysähdyimme Mess Galleryyn syömään jälkiruuat ja sitten suuntasimme takaisin hotellillemme. Vielä vierailu ylimmän kerroksen Min Jiang -näköalabaarissa, jossa joimme oluen ja limun. Sen jälkeen ensimmäinen päivä oli purkissa ja oli aika mennä nukkumaan. On aina kivaa olla Lontoossa!

Bond connection: Natalya Fyodorovna Simonova works as a Level 2 programmer at the Severnaya facility of the Russian Space Forces, on work involving missile guidance systems. When the treasonous General Ouromov and Xenia Onatopp attack the station with a stolen Tiger helicopter, she is left the only survivor besides Boris Grishenko, who had allied himself with Ourumov and Alec Trevelyan, the plan's mastermind. She attempts to find Boris, whom she believes to be innocent; he meets her in a cathedral and turns her over to Onatopp.

Simonova and Bond, who have both been captured by Trevelyan, are trapped in the stolen Tiger helicopter. The helicopter fires missiles at itself, but Bond is able to eject the two, who are subsequently arrested by the Russian government.

Ourumov sets Bond free to clear his own name of murder; Bond escapes, but loses Natalya in the process. He then rescues her from Ourumov and Trevelyan, and they become lovers. The two then follow Trevelyan to Cuba.

Finally, the two assault Trevelyan's satellite base, where Natalya is able to prevent the rogue satellite Mischa from sending an electromagnetic pulse to destroy London. Natalya breaks into the computer room and resets the satellite's course to cause a burn up over the Atlantic Ocean. She destroys the GoldenEye satellite and commandeers a helicopter to pick up Bond and herself by using the gun Bond gave her. Natalya saves Bond right after he defeats Trevelyan. She and Bond leave in the helicopter and get dropped off a distance away. Jack Wade was waiting for the two. He picks them up in the helicopter.
