"It was nearly two o'clock. Bond put a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers sunglasses that would identify him to his contact, then walked southwest through the colorful and narrow cobblestoned streets to the intersection of Rue du Chêne and Rue de l'Étuve. There, surrounded by camera-snapping tourists, was the famous statue of the urinating little boy known as Manneken-Pis. Although not the original statue (which was subject to vandalism and was removed), the current idol is an exact replica and is perhaps the most well known symbol of Brussels. Bond didn't know what its origins were, but he knew that it dated from the early 1400s and was perhaps the effigy of a patriotic Belgian lad who sprinkled a hated Spanish sentry who had passed beneath his window. Another story was that he had saved the Town Hall from a small fire by extinguishing it using only means available. Today, "Little Julian," as he is called, was dressed in a strange red cloak with a little fur collar. Louis XV of France began the tradition of presenting colorful costumes to the little boy and since then he has acquired hundred of outfits."

"Sunset came and dinner was served on a low table inside the lodge. The food was a traditional dhal bhat, a lenti soup over rice. A few vegetables, or sabji, were served with cumin, garlic and ginger. Hot tea accompanied the meal. By the time they had finished, Bond and Chandra were ready to turn in, the altitude and food having had a soporific effect on them. Bond unrolled his Marmot Col sleeping bag, which wasn't as warm as the more popular Cwm, but was lighter and more versatile at altitude. The wooden floor was hard, but at least there was the luxury of having a roof over their heads."

Ingredients:
Chicken strips with honey, rice, yellow paprika, curry paste, onion and cloves of garlic.
Also cream, cooking oil, salt and pepper.

"Dinner was an Indian-style chicken curry that the cook, Girmi, had made less spicy than usual to accommodate the western tastes. Bond was becoming accustomed to the art of eating with his right hand. The Nepalese were experts at flicking a bite of food into the mouth with their thumb. One of the Americans brought a bottle of inexpensive red wine out of his knapsack, saying that he was saving it for Base Camp but knew that drinking alcohol at higher altitudes was not wise. There was just enough for everyone to have a little in a paper cup. Philippe Leaud produced a harmonica and began to play plaintive melodies. One by one people began to wander away from the campfire and settle in for the night."

Ingredients:

For Dal
1/4 cup chana dal (split gram)
1/4 cup toor dal
1/4 cup moong dal (split with skin)
1/4 cup urad dal (split black lentil with skin)
1/4 teaspoon turmeric (haldi)
2 teaspoon ginger grated
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon coriander powder (dhania)
2 teaspoon mango powder (amchoor)
1/2 teaspoon garam masala

For seasoning
3 tablespoons clarified butter (ghee)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1/8 teaspoon asafetida (hing)
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 dried red chili broken in pieces

For Bati
1 cup whole wheat flour (roti ka atta)
1/4 cup fine sooji (semolina)
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup clarified butter (ghee)
1/2 cup milk use as needed


Method
Combine all dals, wash changing water few times. In a pressure cooker add dal with 4 cups of water, salt, turmeric, coriander powder, and ginger, cook on medium high.
After pressure cooker start steaming lower the heat to medium and cook for about eight minutes. Turn off the heat; wait until all the steam has escaped before opening the cooker.
Dal should be soft and mushy, consistency of the pourable batter, if needed add hot water. The consistency of the dal will thicken over time.
Add garam masala and amchoor, mix it well.
Heat ghee in a small saucepan for seasoning; after ghee is moderately hot add cumin seeds as they crack add asafetida, red chilies and red chili powder. Stir for a few seconds. To prevent the spices from burning, you may add 1 teaspoon of water. Pour spiced Chaunk over dhal. Mix it well and let it simmer for two to three minutes.
Dal is ready.

For the Bati
Preheat the oven to 350 degree F.
In a mixing bowl mix all the dry ingredients together, flour, sooji, salt and baking soda. Add the ghee and mix with fingers, add the milk as need to make firm dough, knead the dough well. Set aside for about 10 minutes.
Divide the dough into 8 equal parts and roll them into balls. They will not be very smooth dough ball and will have cracks all over; this will help them to cook all the way through. Arrange the batis over cookie sheet about one inch apart and place the pan on middle oven rack and bake at 350 degree F in a preheated oven for 25 minutes. Turn them over and bake for another 30 minutes until batis are golden brown all around.
Break one bati from one side to make sure they have cooked through.

Bond and his girlfriend Helena are attending a dinner party thrown by the Governor of The Bahamas. The Governor, who has a gambling debt with a member of The Union, has refused to pay up since he feels that he had been cheated, so there is much security detail at the event. A top secret British formula hidden in microfilm, codenamed "Skin 17", is stolen by traitors; scientist Steven Harding and RAF officer Roland Marquis. The microdot is surgically implanted in the pacemaker of an unhealthy old man, who is a former Chinese intelligence agent. James Bond is sent in to recover it before the Union can sell the microfilm to a foreign power.
